In 1934, Bryher published a private edition of The Usual Star for H.D., using the same Darantiere press that had published many works by Contact Press. The stories of The Moment were never published intact, though H.D. planned and discussed them as a collection in “H.D. by Delia Alton.”
After more than 75 years, Lara Vetter brings these two collections together in a single volume: The Usual Star and The Moment (University Press of Florida, 2025). The stories connect to “Secret Name,” “Murex,” Borderline, HERmione, and many of the other narratives that have been more readily available in print. They fill in a significant gap in our understanding of H.D.’s experimentation in short story form.
